Geothermal Systems
Geothermal and ground energy systems can provide sustainable low carbon heating and cooling for buildings and industrial processes, to ensure lower energy bills and lower carbon emissions. These systems work by exploiting the thermal mass of the ground at ‘ambient’ temperatures (typically 10 to 14 degrees Celsius in the UK) from soils and rocks, typically within 200m of the ground surface.
During warm weather the building can be cooled using either a direct heat exchanger or a heat pump to shed heat into the ground. Conversely, during periods of cold weather, the heat pumps can be run in reverse to heat the building using heat energy extracted from the ground.
